15 Homemade Mother's Day Gift Ideas
April 30, 2013
With Mother's Day around the corner, I thought I would round-up some fun, homemade ideas for Mother's Day gifts. I love Mother's Day, and not because I am a mother and hopefully will be smothered with love and gifts, but because I know that other moms are being smothered with love and gifts. Mothers are the queen of the home and should be treated as so. It's actually said that a Mom is a title just above a Queen...so maybe we should be treated better than one would even treat a Queen?
Being a mom, I know how much time, work, stress, and daily worry goes into raising children. That is why I love Mother's Day, because hopefully it can give those hard-working moms a little break. And yes, we all know moms never get much of a break. But hopefully, on this coming Mother's Day, they can feel loved and appreciated, which will be break enough for them. With that, I hope one of these gift options will appeal to you or create a spark of inspiration for a gift idea all your own.
1. Jar of Sunshine
This Mother's Day, give your mom an uplifting gift; make her a Jar of Sunshine. "How Does She" explains this process of creating your mom a Jar of Sunshine. "It's a jar of happy, yellow candies with little notes of love and gratitude attached." What a fun little treat for mom to look forward to eating everyday!
2. Grandkid Handprints Apron
Here's a fun, inexpensive, homemade gift idea you can do. Simply Kierste gives a simple tutorial on how to make this cute gift. It can also be made saying "Mother" with all her kids' handprints.
3. Baby Footprint Pot
Is the mother in your life a gardener? Some cute terra cotta pots painted with grandkids footprints will be given a special place in their yard or kitchen window.
4. Personalized Clock
Here's a fun homemade clock tutorial from Fabric Paper Glue. You can personalize it by making it your mother's favorite color or to make it extra special mod podge a picture to the clock instead. Creating a fun, personal gift that will be happily hung for years. The tutorial doesn't have you place a wall hanger on the back of the clock, but you can purchase them really cheap at your local Walmart. They come with a couple tiny nails to attach the hanger to the clock.
5. Finger Painted Frame
This one only requires the work of your child. Buy a frame that comes with a mat, take out the mat and allow your child to go at it with paints, allow to dry, and place back in frame with a picture of child and mommy, or child and grandma, or just the sweet little child with paint all over themselves, depending on who this gift is being given to.
6. Vintage Vases
U Create brings a super unique vase idea for your mother. Find some cute watering cans or old milk tins, spray paint them the desired color, and you can either cut some vinyl words if you have a Cricut, paint them yourself, or buy some stickers to decorate them with. I have a post coming up in the future on "How to Cut Vinyl with your Cricut."
7. Grandkids Picture Sign
Grandkids really do make life grand for grandparents. Make this cute sign for your beloved mother. All you have to do is buy some wood (pine will work great), stain/paint it, and then buy/make a cute vinyl sticker saying. There are a lot of Vinyl Sticker sellers on Etsy. This saying sells for about $10-$15. Apply it to your board and then hot glue some clothes pins on. Then decorate and embellish the clothespins with scrapbook paper, buttons, flowers, etc.
8. Framed Key Hanger
Over at Red Fly Creations, a tutorial is shared for a framed key hanger. Super simple and cheap to make. Local thrift stores, such as D.I., will have frames for $2 that you can repaint and screw in hooks to. What a fun cute way to keep track of your keys every day!
9. Mason Jar Pin Cushions
Does your sweet mother love to sew? Check out Crazy Wonderful's tutorial on how to make these awesome sewing organizers. You can use any size jar, and while you're at it, make one for yourself if you love to sew.
10. Photo Vases and Containers
Make your mom a cute memorable vase or glass container by painting mod podge inside the glass container where the photo is going to go, then place the photo inside and on top of the mod podge, smooth it out until there are no bumps, then mod podge over it again.
11. Glass Etched Dishes
Is the kitchen an area of expertise for your mother? Make a special dish that she will love using! Etch a picture, last name, or even a quote on a dish for your mother. Make It and Love It gives a great tutorial for glass etching dishes. Glass etching is permanent and will not scrub or cook off.
12. Wood Block Photo Display
Here's a super simple, unique gift for your photo-lovin' mom. And the cost to make this baby: about $3. Shanty 2 Chic provides the tutorial as well as multiple printables for the mat on the front of the board. You could have your board say "So Very Blessed", "My Sweet Family", or "We Love You".
13. Cute Cookie Box
I love this cute baked goods gift. Bake your mom a batch of her favorite cookies, stack them in a couple mason jars with a ribbon, and place them in a box with this Mother acronym printable. Don't have a box to put your cookies in? Upcycle a shoe box like the ones below for a unique gift box that can be used over and over again!
14. A Forever Bouquet
This is a great gift for the kids to make and give. Print out this poem here and give it to mom with one of these unique "forever bouquets".
The first bouquet comes from Kinder-Craze, using your child's painted handprints as the flowers. Hardly any work is put into this, making it the perfect gift for a little child to give.
The second bouquet is from Spoonful. You trace the child's handprints, cut them out, and curl them up; add in some yellow pipe cleaners, and attach them to green straws, to make a darling lily bouquet for your mom.
Another option is to purchase a silk flower bouquet and place it in a cute vase for your mom to use as a decoration in her home.
15. I Love You This Much
Last but not least, I love this creative gift from A Day In My Life. Your child's handprints are attached to a long strip that folds out to express visually how much your child loves you!
I hope you loved the round-up of homemade Mother's Day gifts I found. And I wish for you all to have a wonderful Mother's Day!
What did you get your mom for Mother's Day?
