How to Make a TuTu Backdrop

April 25, 2013

We recently celebrated our daughters first birthday.  I had planned on it being a "tutu party", although there was only 3 tutus in the end (one on the wall, one on the birthday girl, one on her friend) because I never came up with the time to make my other ideas.  Despite the lack of tutus, it was still a success.  One of my favorite parts was the tutu backdrop I made to go behind the table.  Super simple, and it doesn't have to be for parties.  You could make it shorter and use it as a valance in a ballerina bedroom, use it as decoration above a crib, or whatever else you can think of using it for.  Let's get started.

TuTu Backdrop
Supplies Needed:
Tulle (a lot; depends on the length of your rod)
Curtain Rod
Scissors

1. Pull out your curtain rod and clear a space
2. I have a couple big bolts of tulle so that is where I got my tulle from.  Using it from a bolt gives it a thicker look than using the strips of tulle you can buy at a craft store.  Either will work though for this.
3. Cut your tulle to the desired length.
4. Tie it in a knot on top.  I tied knots so that I could save on tulle.  If you want it extra thick, you can fold the tulle in half first, place the folded part in front of the rod with the loop just above the rod, then wrap the other end of the tulle under and around the rod, and through the loop.  Pull tight.
5. Keep tying tulle until your rod is full.
6. Hang up.  Since this was only going to be used for a party, we didn't want to have to put screws into the wall above our kitchen table in order to hang the rod up. What you can do is use push pins where the screws will go.  They need to be strong push pins, not cheapy ones.  It may not be perfect, but it works perfect for short term.

I hope this tutorial is helpful and gives you inspiration for your next tutu project!

Anybody else do a tutu/ballerina party? What were some of your party ideas?
